Talking 5G Business Models with Professor Mischa Dohler

In this video, Guy Daniels from TelecomTV talks to Professor Mischa Dohler, Director of the Centre for Telecommunications Research, Kings College London about the future directions for 5G as we head towards a reverse value chain in the telecoms industry.

Professor Dohler is pushing for new tech thinking when it comes to 5G, so we accelerate innovation. We need much more scalability, reliability, liability (with spectrum also being a legal aspect), low energy consumption with a high power system, with very fast transmissions at very high rates.

So what are the implications for new business models? First of all, the end customer will be B2B and span across many different verticals, from oil and gas to automobile and construction companies connecting their IoT stuff. Vendors like Ericsson are already speaking B2B. Look at Ericsson's deal with Volvo. This means it now has leverage over operators. This is a reverse value chain.

Is there a place for operators? Yes, because they are the owners of the spectrum and will also cover both the consumer and B2B space.

With the rollout of standards for commercial deployment not happening until 2020, are we moving in the right direction?
"Yes. It takes the cellular industry a decade to get from one generation to the next. It's a very complex system and you need to get consensus from all the players globally on many different aspects. That's an entire ecosystem, spanning thousands of companies". There is very high pressure in the industry and competition is a very good thing.
