NOKIA Latin America on IoT

Mobile World Live interviews Dimitri Diliani, head of Nokia’s Latin America operation, on opportunities for IoT in Latin America.

Q1. Where is the value in the IoT ecosystem?

The value comes from many sides, the network, devices, the supply chain but most importantly from the applications, the analytics and the predications it enables.

Q2. Does Latin America need an IoT ecosystem?

Absolutely. IoT is global. The big advantage is that applications can be customised to different geographies and verticals, meeting specific needs. NOKIA is working with a major operator in Brazil to rollout new applications specifically for the Brazilian market. This is on top of what NOKIA is doing globally.

Q3. Which market segments will benefit most?

This is an open book as tech giants, operators and new entrants can all potentially drive the market. The most valuable asset of operators is having the network and the connectivity. It's important to connect with the value chain, working with adjacent industries rolling out the applications.

Q4. How does IoT sit in the Latin American market?

IoT is new to most people in the region and requires a lot of investment. The connectivity and the demand will come over time and with new investments. It's also important to evolve the network, especially in rural areas, where it can ultimately become an "as-coverage" service. For vendors like NOKIA, IoT is an add-on, part of the on-going developments taking place independently of IoT but IoT will most definitely benefit from these developments.
