Ericsson on new business opportunities with 5G

Hans Mickelson, Ericsson talks 5G and its industrial applications at 5G World .

From current industrial applications to new business opportunities and network slicing - here are some key insights on what to expect from 5G.

Gaining efficiencies
Ericsson works with SCANIA to improve its platooning by shrinking the distance between the lorries and reducing fuel consumption quite significantly.
Innovation partnerships are mostly about making the possible use of the network, both the network Ericsson deploy and the network they provide to operators.

5G for industry
Ericsson is working with ABB on the remote control of robots, re-thinking the way they provide the network, reducing latency, re-distributing functions in the network so they have the right characteristics for the applications.

5G is much more than speed play, latency and more bandwidth. It's bringing completely new ways of engaging with industrial verticals as new players in the space.

Network slicing

Building core network and connecting radio to the cloud more efficiently. Logical slices are totally isolated so they can deploy different services on the same slice.
A big change technically speaking is managing the network for the full life cycle in this new scenario.

2020 - drop zone for 5G: what are the challenges for standards bodies?
The standards bodies have to get a lot of things to get right. A key challenge will be having a a pre-commercial release for the Olympics in 2018 and again in 2020 in Asia.
Work is needed on the radio part, on the core part and with industries to enable them in the ecosystem.
Time is probably the biggest challenge - the next two years will be very intense.
