Building Blocks for 5G-ENSURE Achivements 2016

5G-ENSURE is the reference project for 5G security, privacy and trust & provides inputs to other 5G PPP projects in defining the 5G security architecture.

Our main achievements in 2016 are captured in this info-graphic.

Building blocks for these achievements are summarised below.

February 2016 - Use Cases: use cases illustrating a wide range of security concerns including user privacy, identity management, authentication, authorisation, key establishment for IoT, air interface protection, botnet mitigation, isolation of core network functionality, secure virtualisation and verification of virtualised node and platform, security monitoring and control, and lawful interception.

April - May 2016 - Public Consultation: The aim of the public consultation was to identify research and innovation priorities on 5G security and privacy challenges and share our findings with our community. Most respondents were from industry and research, including representatives form other projects in the 5G PPP and projects on cloud computing. Our findings show that the most urgent areas for  5G security standardisation are: network virtualisation security, trust model evolution to capture new business and technology capabilities, privacy and confidentiality of identities and data, as well as AAA (Authentication, Authorisation and Accountability). The consultation was one of the first steps in a sustained multi-stakeholder dialogue aimed at building consensus on priority actions around 5G security and privacy issues. Findings from the Public Consultation.

June 2016 - 1st International Workshop on 5G Security Standardisation: an effective forum for discussing and sharing technical insights emerging from 5G-ENSURE findings, and an opportunity to exchange European perspectives on security work and related standardisation actions. It also offered insights on hot security topics and on-going study items with representatives from ETSI ISG NFV, 3GPP SA3, IMT2020 FG of ITU-T SG 13, and 5G PPP Work Group on Pre-standardisation. A key take-home message is the need for early action and co-operation to reach common agreements on a minimal security baseline from both an end-user standpoint and on the provider's side. The workshop helped 5G-ENSURE chart a course for coordinated work on 5G security with the involvement of 5G PPP projects, standards groups, international initiatives and the 5G PPP Work Group on Security. A second workshop will be organised in 2017 to measure progress on security standardisation work and to extend the cooperation Post-event Report. Interviews. Article on outcomes in ETSI Newsletter, The Standard, September 2016.
